Install from Google Workspace Marketplace
How do I start?
Install DocMerge from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Then open a spreadsheet and choose Extensions → Mail Merge to Docs & PDF – DocMerge → Open DocMerge. Click “Insert example” to get a customer list and a quote template, click Preview to see the first quote, then Create. Every row gets a status and a link to its PDF.
How do I make my own template?
Write a Google Doc and put the column names from row 1 of your sheet in double curly brackets where the values should go, for example {{Customer}} or {{Amount}}. Fields work in the text, in tables, in the header and in the footer. In the panel, click “Choose my Google Docs template” and pick the Doc.
Why does a field stay as {{Name}} in the document?
There is no column with that name in row 1 of the sheet. The panel lists such fields in red before you start, and the status in each row names them. Check the spelling; upper and lower case and extra spaces do not matter.
Will my formatting be kept?
Yes. DocMerge copies your template and only replaces the {{fields}}. Fonts, colours, tables, images, page breaks, headers and footers stay as they are. A field takes the formatting of its first character, so make the whole field bold if you want a bold value.
Why are dates and amounts exactly as in my sheet?
DocMerge uses the value as the cell shows it, with your number format, currency and the spreadsheet's language and time zone. To change how a date looks in the document, change the cell's format in the sheet (Format → Number).
What happens with large sheets?
DocMerge makes five documents at a time and works in steps of a few minutes, because Google stops add-ons after six minutes. Keep the panel open until it says “All done”. If it closes, open it again and click Continue: rows that already have a document are skipped.
A row says Failed. What now?
The status says why, for example that an image link is not public or that Google asked us to slow down. Fix it and click Create again. Only rows without a document are made.
How do I make all documents again?
Click “Make all rows again” in the panel. It clears the status columns; documents already in Drive are not deleted.
How do line items work? (Pro)
Tick “Line items” and choose a column, for example Invoice. Rows with the same value become one document. In the template, write {{Line.Item}}, {{Line.Qty}} and so on in one table row; that row repeats once per sheet row, with its formatting.
How do images work? (Pro)
Write {{image:Logo}} in the template, or {{image:Logo|120}} for a width of 120 points. The Logo column must hold a public link to a PNG, JPEG or GIF.
Can I email the PDFs?
Yes, also on the free plan: one email per row from your own Gmail, with the PDF attached. Use it for documents your recipients expect, such as quotes, invoices or certificates. It is not for marketing email to people who have not asked for it. Gmail allows about 100 emails a day on a free account and 1,500 on Google Workspace; the panel shows how many you have left.
I bought Pro. How do I turn it on?
After paying through Stripe, click “I have paid – refresh” in the panel. Pro is linked to the Google account email you paid with, so use the same account in Google Sheets. If you paid with another email, write to [email protected].
How do I cancel Pro or get a refund?
In the panel, click Billing to cancel, change plan, update your card or download invoices. Pro stays active until the end of the period you paid for, and nothing is deleted. If it does not work for you, write to [email protected] within 14 days of your first payment and you get a full refund.
