Accessibility checker for Google Docs and Google Slides

Check and fix accessibility in Google Docs and Google Slides

See what stops a screen reader user, fix it in one click, and export a PDF they can actually read. Checking is free and unlimited. Pro is €9 a month.

Install free from Google Workspace Marketplace

No card needed. Open any document and you see your score and the three most important fixes in under a minute.

A Google Doc with the Accessibility Checker panel showing a score of 52 and the first issue to fix: an image without alt text

Every issue explained, and most fixed in one click

Accessibility Checker checks your document against WCAG 2.1 AA: headings, alt text, colour contrast, tables, links, lists, title and language. Each issue says in plain words who it stops and why. Click Make it a heading, Fix the colour or Add a header row, and only that thing changes. You can undo it like any other edit.

Alt text with AI, approved by you

Click Suggest with AI and get a short description of the image, or the main finding of a chart. You read it, edit it and save it. Nothing is added to your document without your approval.

A PDF that screen readers can read

Google's own Download as PDF has no tags, so a screen reader cannot find the headings, tables or alt text. Accessibility Checker builds a tagged PDF with all of them, and checks every file against the PDF/UA standard with the independent veraPDF validator before you get it. It lands in your Google Drive, ready to publish or send.

Google Slides too

Missing or duplicate slide titles, reading order, alt text, contrast, and slides that have become one big picture, which often happens after Gemini Beautify. Accessibility Checker finds them and helps you give the slide its title and text back.

It only reads the document you have open

Some accessibility add-ons ask to see, edit and delete every Google Docs document you have. This one only reads the document or presentation you have open. When you export a PDF or ask for an AI suggestion, the content is used on our server in the EU for that one task and deleted right away.

Questions

Is the accessibility checker free?

Yes. Checking is free and unlimited, and the free plan includes 10 one-click fixes, 5 AI alt texts and 1 accessible PDF a month. No card is needed. Pro is €9 a month for unlimited fixes, Fix all, AI alt text, accessible PDFs and the audit report.

Does Google Docs have a built-in accessibility checker?

Google Docs has settings that help people who use a screen reader, but no checker that lists the accessibility issues in your document. Accessibility Checker adds one, for Google Docs and Google Slides, and fixes most issues in one click.

What does it check?

Headings and their order, alt text on images, drawings and charts, colour contrast, table header rows and merged cells, links like click here, fake lists, very small text, the document title and language. In Google Slides it also checks slide titles, reading order and slides that are one big picture.

How do I make an accessible PDF from Google Docs?

Google's own Download as PDF has no tags, so a screen reader cannot find the headings, tables or alt text. Fix the document first, then click Accessible PDF in Accessibility Checker. You get a tagged PDF with headings, reading order, alt text, table headers, language and title, checked with the independent veraPDF validator.

Does it help with the European Accessibility Act and ADA Title II?

It checks your documents against WCAG 2.1 AA, the standard both rules point to, and saves a report of what was found and fixed. No tool can make you compliant on its own: some things, like whether alt text describes an image well, still need a person to judge.

What can the add-on see?

Only the document or presentation you have open, not your other files. When you export a PDF or ask for an AI suggestion, the content goes to our server in the EU, is used for that one task and is deleted right away.
